The foundation of my beliefs about human value starts with the teachings of the Bible. Matthew 10:29 discusses the Father’s care for the sparrows and the number of hairs on our heads (Holy Bible, American Standard Version; Matthew 10:29). Isaiah 43:1, which is a personal favorite, says, “I have called you by name; you are mine” (American Standard Version; Isaiah 43:1). Imagine being loved so deeply that the God of the universe knows you by name and claims you as His own. The extent to which the Bible addresses human worth and value significantly influences my views on bioethical issues, such as abortion, designer babies, and stem cell research.

I believe that life begins at conception, and therefore, I oppose abortion. Unborn babies are a form of human life and possess equal worth regardless of their stage of development (Pack, 2020). The taking of a human life is not a decision I could personally justify. That being said, I am not the judge, and I have never faced a situation where abortion was a possible solution for a medical or traumatic issue, such as rape or incest. As a Christian, I feel a responsibility to treat every patient I care for with compassion and dignity, regardless of the decisions they make, and to avoid being the one to throw the first stone. I also believe there are many ethical concerns surrounding the practice of altering genetic traits to create a perfect baby. I believe that God should be in charge of life and death, as excessive human intervention can lead to unintended consequences. In my opinion, stem cell research should be restricted to adult stem cells to avoid the destruction of embryos.
