The meaning of Christian spirituality encompasses our beliefs, values, and lifestyle that reflect the teachings of the Bible (Klein, 2025). It represents a way of life founded on a relationship with Christ and characterized by Christian values such as love and compassion. These beliefs and values hold significant importance in healthcare. Numerous verses in the Bible highlight that humanity is created in the image of God (Bogue & Hogan, 2022). As Christians, understanding that God assigned our worth when He created us in His likeness compels us to treat every individual with compassion and dignity, regardless of their net worth, race, attire, or how they treat us. We are called to model the behavior of Christ, who brought hope and comfort to those who were sick and suffering. Additionally, as Christians, we can depend on the gift of the Holy Spirit to lead us, guide us, and act through us when we lack words or find ourselves in stressful, difficult situations. We can draw on God’s strength and comfort, a benefit not afforded by other worldviews.
Christian spirituality also influences an individual’s perspective on death. In scientific and medical contexts, death is seen as final. However, for Christians, there is the assurance that through Jesus and the gift of salvation, our physical bodies will be renewed (Bogue & Hogan, 2022). There will be no more pain or suffering, and we will live eternally in the presence of our Creator. Consequently, our compassion and care for patients should involve a holistic approach that addresses their emotional and spiritual well-being alongside their physical health.
