The various Christian views on spirituality and compassion hold significant importance for an ICU nurse, as these perspectives can deeply influence the delivery of care. In critical care environments like the ICU, families are often in a vulnerable position, facing moments of extreme emotional and physical distress. Nurses in these settings not only provide physical care but also engage in the proper care of our patients. To address the Christian view in healthcare, we must understand the need for holistic care in the workplace. “Holistic nursing represents a transformative approach to patient care, integrating mind, body, and spirit to promote overall well-being. This comprehensive healthcare model views patients as whole persons, not just a collection of symptoms or diagnoses. Holistic nurses embrace a philosophy that emphasizes the interconnectedness of physical, emotional, and spiritual health, aiming to provide care that addresses all aspects of a person’s life” (Flarey, 2025). Collaboration is important, as nurses can reach out to chaplain services offered through our facilities or even social work to help support the family of the patient.
A Bible verse that closely aligns the Christian view with nursing care is “Ephesians 4:32: Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (BibleGateway). Christian spirituality emphasizes love, empathy, and kindness core values that align closely with compassionate nursing care.
