Using the Walden Library

Where can you find evidence to inform your thoughts and scholarly writing? Throughout your degree program, you will use research literature to explore ideas, guide your thinking, and gain new insights. As you search the research literature, it is important to use resources that are peer-reviewed and from scholarly journals. You may already have some favorite online resources and databases that you use or have found useful in the past. For this Discussion, you explore databases available through the Walden Library.

Note: Unless otherwise noted, initial postings to Discussions are due on or before Day 3, and response postings are due on or before Day 6. You are required to participate in the Discussion on at least three different days (a different day for main post and each response). It is important to adhere to the weekly time frame to allow others ample time to respond to your posting. In addition, you are expected to respond to questions directed toward your own initial posting in a timely manner.

Week 3 Discussion

APA Formatted Citation

My area of practice is Critical Care, thus lending my choice of article to a topic related to care of patients I provided this past weekend and information that I was able to share with a coworker to help educate a newer nurse to this specialty.

Database Selection

For this discussion I utilized PubMed through the National Library of Medicine as the database of choice for finding an article of interest relevant to my area of practice. I chose this database because I am very familiar with this database and the filters to better narrow down the results of the search keywords.

Recommendation of Database

I would recommend this database to my colleagues as it is a very bountiful source of information and contains various types of works, not limited to journal articles. I do highly recommend this database as the filters and very wide range of sources make this a valuable asset to the clinician looking for research on any given topic in healthcare.

Difficulties with Utilization

The biggest difficulty I find with searching for an article is whether or not it is relevant to my thought process for the specific discussion, but for this assignment not requiring a specific train of thought, more flexibility was afforded to me so that I can utilize information I want to consume versus information that is only relevant to what is being discussed. I often find that the school library, while it is a great asset to the program, takes some getting used to in order to easily search for articles and research relevant to the material at hand.
