Solution

A continued issue within my facility and unit is a lack of providers entering their own orders or a long delay in orders being entered when necessary in critical situations. According to Hayavi-haghighi et al. (2021), improvements in costs, time management, and patient safety have been reported by many studies when providers enter their orders using a computerized provider order entry (CPOE). Common errors encountered when nurses are driven to enter orders received by providers include, order duplication, orders entered under the incorrect patient, and incorrect ordering of medications including dose and route but this is not an exhaustive list (Hayavi-haghighi et al., 2021). According to Reichert (2024), reduced use of CPOE by physicians is often attributed to lack of knowledge about the system and disagreement with the presented orders sets when utilizing large order sets. According to Keenan et al. (2021), other barriers to CPOE use includes variations in system design between healthcare systems for providers that work within multiple facilities where safety checks and flags and complete layout design might be different. As a unit, it is important for nurses to remind providers of the benefits of utilizing the CPOE even if it means showing and helping a provider understand the order sets. Nursing as a profession has many other systems they manage with regard to patient care and providers adding another system, prescribing treatments and medications which is outside of scope of practice, adds to the care burden and can increase errors. The best steps to take to improve provider CPOE interaction is for nurse leadership to identify the major barriers within the facility and address those problems with the providers themselves.
