NUR-630 Topic 1 DQ 2
Some consider the integration of evidence-based practice a “cookbook” approach. Do you agree or disagree? Explain. Support your position with one or two examples and one or two references.

Solution

The query of evidence-based practice being a “cookbook” approach, is somewhat disagreeable. According to Citrome & Arbuck, (2021) evidence-based medicine is a culmination of clinical judgement, relevant scientific evidence, and patient’s values and preferences. In essence, not every approach is going to be the same. Some items that should be considered are using the best evidence-based practice, integrating individual clinical expertise, and considering the individual patients’ preferences. A few examples of this are the use of cognitive behavioral therapy in psychology and the use of checklists in surgery.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is backed by empirical data to be effective in certain mental health conditions. Clinicians have implemented this into their practice because the evidence suggests it is highly effective (Gabunia, 2023). The use of checklists in done as early as preadmission for the operating room patient and continues into the recovery area. This checklist may vary patient to patient and case by case. Nonetheless, these checklists have been found by the World Health Organization to reduce morbidity and mortality (Gabunia, 2023).
