Topic 1 DQ 2
Some consider the integration of evidence-based practice a “cookbook” approach. Do you agree or disagree? Explain. Support your position with one or two examples and one or two references.
SOLUTION
One may have formed a hypothesis of integrating evidence-based practice (EBP) as a cookbook approach. In one way, I agree with evidence-based practices being seen as a cookbook approach. This is because a cookbook has the necessary ingredients to make up a recipe. In nursing, those “ingredients “are interventions that should be specific to a patient’s condition and/or situation which is similar to evidence-based practices. However, these interventions can be substituted or adjusted according to preference and need. Interventions that may have once worked in the past may be changed, tailored, or altered to fit the needs of specific units, hospitals, and patients. EBP is supposed to create a movement focusing on using high-quality clinical research in clinical decision-making (Masic et al., 2008).
For example, a standard cookbook approach may prove that attaching a tabs monitor to a patient’s gown while sitting in the chair will prohibit a fall. But what happens to a patient if their gown is removed with the attached tabs, and then proceeds to get out of the chair without assistance? This is why a cookbook approach is not the most effective method of integrating evidence-based practices into nursing. This is an example of why other interventions may have to be implemented to prevent a fall or to minimize contributing factors of a fall. Evidence-based practices utilize problem-solving techniques to focus on promoting patient safety and outcomes (Fowler, 2021).
