As technology continues to advance, organizations are using social media and online platforms to attract and acquire eligible employees. What methods and specific websites are currently being used in your organization to attract and acquire potential employees online? As a job seeker, reflect on the benefits and challenges of using social media platforms, such as LinkedIn, for finding employment. What are the drawbacks that an employer faces when using websites to attract future employees for positions and how can these drawbacks be reduced?
Solution
My school district utilizes a dashboard on its website to draw a majority of the inquisitive traffic to learn more about what positions are available at any time. The dashboard consists of positions in education that can be filtered by teaching, leading, and support roles. They also offer hiring expos in March, traditionally after budgets have been finalized and school staff know if they are returning the next year or not. For schools that were affected by closures or merging with another school, the representatives from the Talent and Acquisition team will schedule intentional visits to meet with staff affected and work with them on their resume or assisting with placement elsewhere. Another platform utilize by the district is Handshake.com. Handshake connects new hires or recent or graduates to job opportunities, internships, career events, or any additional partnership opportunity a university has with employers.
Platforms like LinkedIn can be beneficial for job seekers as it is a great source for business professionals to connect. They are also beneficial because the platform is interactive with connections. The ability to have recruiters contact you or hear feedback from people you know is helpful. The risk with using social platforms is that they are public-facing. If a colleague sees that you are looking for a new role elsewhere, that information is now available for all to see. This could potentially create a hostile environment depending on how the employer or colleague chooses to handle the new information. With Linkedin, an employer could be limited in what information they find based on what connections they have. This could limit the employee to only the connections they have made to makeup their network.
