Looking ahead, select one area of the current National Patient Safety Goals program and make a prediction as to what might change in that area based on technological or other advancements. Consider patient identification standards, communication processes, and infection control protocols, among others.

Solution

Looking at the area I live in, it is predicted to reach 1,000,000 people by 2050, which is 25 years. Nearly 36 people per day move to Northwest Arkansas and it is consider the 18th fastest growing metropolitan in the United States. (NWA Council, 2025) Austin TX being number one on that list, look to reach 5.2 to 8.3 million people by that same time, (Pandey, 2023). With growth like this, there are other areas that are declining just as rapidly, such as Florencetown, Arizona, where the population declined by 4.7%, (Kirn, 2024). In rural areas, there will likely need to be a section amendment for communication processes and how EHR systems are implemented or integrated, with carriers and service providers leaving those areas.

Another section that may need improvements will be Goal 3 or medication safety, adding provisions for potential doctor shopping in areas where the population is low. There were several documents and accounts in the Purdue Pharma case detailing instances related to the aforementioned tatics to receive class 2 prescriptions. This may be worth calling out for quality and safety for those providers that will continue to serve rural areas.
