Solution

The healthcare and nursing sectors have significantly changed; however, the change has not stopped and will continue to evolve to ensure better delivery of healthcare services to patients. The patient safety goals rank patient identification as one of the areas that help improve patient safety and security while in healthcare facilities; consequently, this area will significantly change due to technological advancements (Barka et al., 2022). In the current healthcare system, the national patient safety goals require the identification of a patient using at least two patient identifiers, such as their name and date of birth, or checking the tags on the wrists; however, this is going to change with the sophistication of technology that provides the use of biometric identification to help identify the patients correctly.

With technology, biometric identification of patients is the way to go because it uses some of the most unique attributes of a patient, such as fingerprints and facial recognition, to identify the patients correctly during medication administration or taking the patient for surgery. Using biometric patient identification brings many advantages when handling patients, but these could be compromised when using at least two patient identifiers. This method allows for accuracy, efficacy, and security of the patient information and identification process. Unlike the two patient identifiers, using biometric identification methods is accurate because the identifiers are unique to each patient, even if the patients have the same names or conditions (Morishita & Ueda, 2021). In addition, the biometric identification method is efficient because it is faster and more efficient when identifying patients than using manual patient identifiers. Moreover, unlike the patient identifiers, biometric identification offers more security to the patients because it is difficult to fabricate the identifiers.
