As the School Age Coordinator at McGuire Youth Programs, I have found the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) to be a helpful resource for managing my role. My job involves overseeing after-school programs, managing staff, and making sure the children are safe and engaged. SHRM provides many resources that help HR professionals like me do our jobs better.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, our team faced many challenges, such as moving to remote learning and ensuring safety for in-person programs. SHRM’s COVID-19 Resource Center offered useful tools, like sample policies and checklists, that helped us adjust quickly and keep everyone safe while still offering quality programs (SHRM, n.d.). These resources made it easier to navigate the changes we needed to make.
Additionally, SHRM’s focus on strategic human resources has helped me align the goals of our team with the overall mission of McGuire Youth Programs. One of SHRM’s toolkits on strategic HR gave me ideas on how to build strong HR practices and develop the skills of my staff, which is important for creating a positive work environment (SHRM, n.d.).
In summary, now I know how SHRM’s tools and guidance can help me manage my responsibilities effectively. From planning for unexpected events to creating strong HR practices, I understand how SHRM can assist me in supporting my team and the children we serve in the best way possible.
