Using the Walden Library

Where can you find evidence to inform your thoughts and scholarly writing? Throughout your degree program, you will use research literature to explore ideas, guide your thinking, and gain new insights. As you search the research literature, it is important to use resources that are peer-reviewed and from scholarly journals. You may already have some favorite online resources and databases that you use or have found useful in the past. For this Discussion, you explore databases available through the Walden Library.

Note: Unless otherwise noted, initial postings to Discussions are due on or before Day 3, and response postings are due on or before Day 6. You are required to participate in the Discussion on at least three different days (a different day for main post and each response). It is important to adhere to the weekly time frame to allow others ample time to respond to your posting. In addition, you are expected to respond to questions directed toward your own initial posting in a timely manner.

Discussion Post: Christian Beliefs and Holistic Mental Health Care

My area of interest includes the incorporation of mental health with Christian beliefs, allowing for a holistic mental health treatment plan. There is research that supports the integration of spirituality and religion into psychotherapy to significantly improve mental health outcomes (Lucchetti et al., 2021). Below is the peer-review article I chose:

                                                                               APA Citation

Dombo, E. A. (2022). The impact of religiosity and spirituality on health and mental health wellbeing. Journal of Religion & Spirituality in Social Work: Social Thought, 41(1), 1–2. https://doi.org/10.1080/15426432.2022.2035518Links to an external site.

                                                                             Database Used

I located this article through the use of the Walden University Library, with an advanced search using full text through the SocIndex. The SocIndex database includes areas of mental health, social work, and spirituality, allowing it to be a strong resource for interdisciplinary topics.

                                                       Difficulties Experienced During the Search

At first, I faced some challenges in finding articles with a focus on spiritualty, as well as finding articles that included both themes in a clinical way. Many articles that I found did not mention Christian believes or were too theoretical. In order to narrow my search, I used terms such as “Christian mental health,” and “faith-based therapy.” I also included filters to only include peer-reviewed articles with full text in the last five years. With the use of the keywords and navigating through several databases, I was finally able to find articles that were relevant to the integration of faith in the mental health practice.

Usefulness of the Database for Colleagues

I do believe this database would be useful for my colleagues, particularly those working in social work, spiritual care or counseling. SocIndex offers content in relation to mental health, it includes scholarly articles with the integration of religion and spirituality into holistic treatments, this enhances overall emotional well-being and healing (Weber & Pargament, 2014). This is a valuable resource for professionals whose clients may come from different religious backgrounds.

                                                         Would You Recommend This Database?

I would highly recommend the use of this database to others, as it is user-friendly offering a wide range of academic journals that are appropriate in holistic care with the use of spirituality. For those who are researching mental health with Christian beliefs, SocIndex with full text is a reliable resource. It utilizes evidence-based search results into how spiritual practices can encourage emotional well being and healing, which is vital for professionals like myself who take a holistic approach to care.
