I could easily navigate through our Walden library, which provided me access to several database sources listed alphabetically. For this post, I decided to use the CINAHL Plus database and search for information on the increased risk for coronary artery disease among patients with type 2 diabetes. This is an area of personal interest because I worked in a cardiothoracic unit for many years and saw the impact of this issue on patients and their families, as well as the importance of early detection and treatment. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that alters the integrity of organs and tissues in the body and predisposes individuals to cardiovascular problems. Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2, or Lp-PLA2, is an enzyme that has been found to significantly influence the development of cardiac disease caused by chemical processes that promote inflammation and oxidation. Results from studies conducted to inquire about the value of measuring serum (Lp-PLA2) levels concluded that these biomarkers may be a vital diagnostic tool, assisting in the early detection of coronary artery disease (Mallela et al., 2025).

Would this database be useful to your colleagues?
Absolutely. The nursing profession, like other health disciplines, is a commitment and has a duty to provide patient care rooted on scientific evidence obtained from comprehensive clinical research. This research is vital as it provides a foundation for standards and guidelines for practice. For this reason, using database sources that are reliable and up to date is extremely important.
Would you recommend this database?
Yes because of the accessed to valuable information that can be found and the scientific evidence that supports it makes it an important asset to improve our profession.
