My worldview on human value deeply influences my stance on bioethical issues like abortion, designer babies, and stem cell research. I believe that every human life holds intrinsic value, regardless of age, stage of development, or genetic composition. Human dignity, an intrinsic value inherent in all individuals, is a fundamental idea in healthcare ethics (Sip et al., 2023). This perspective stems from my belief in the inherent dignity of individuals, which I see as foundational to ethical decision-making in healthcare and bioethics. Regarding abortion, I approach it with a strong emphasis on the sanctity of life. I believe that the fetus, as a developing human, deserves protection and respect. However, I also recognize the complex circumstances that might surround a pregnancy, such as maternal health risks or instances of rape or incest. While I uphold the value of human life, I understand the importance of balancing this with compassion and respect for the autonomy and well-being of the mother. Therefore, I think the decision should be carefully considered with a focus on both the moral and health implications for the mother and child.
When it comes to designer babies, my concern is rooted in the idea of genetic manipulation and its potential consequences on society. While I believe that technology can be a force for good in preventing genetic diseases, I also worry about the ethical risks of selecting traits that go beyond health, like physical appearance or intelligence. This could lead to a society where certain lives are valued more than others, undermining the concept of equality and intrinsic worth.
Stem cell research holds promise for advancing medical science, particularly in the treatment of diseases and injuries. Cancer, neurological illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, spinal cord injuries, diabetes, and tissue damage are among the problems that stem cell therapy has promised to address (Hussen et al., 2024). I support it when it respects human dignity and does not exploit vulnerable life stages. My view is that it is crucial to navigate this issue carefully to avoid the destruction of potential human life in pursuit of medical advancement.
In all these issues, my worldview emphasizes the need for compassion, respect for autonomy, and a balance between technological advancement and moral responsibility.
